Danish badminton player Mia Blitchfeldt expressed disappointment over the hygiene conditions at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex after her exit from the BWF India Open tournament. She criticized the venue’s cleanliness, calling it “dirty and unhealthy,” and highlighted the challenges faced by players due to the poor conditions. Blitchfeldt shared her concerns on social media, emphasizing the difficulties in focusing on the game under such circumstances.

The tournament faced issues like bird droppings on the court, a monkey roaming in the stands, and stray dogs inside the premises. These incidents disrupted matches and raised safety concerns for the players. Despite the challenges, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) acknowledged the issues and stated that the new venue offers improved infrastructure for hosting events like the BWF World Championships.

Blitchfeldt, while appreciating the attention to the problem, expressed doubts about India’s suitability to host major championships under the current conditions. She called for better player protection and improved facilities to ensure a conducive environment for future tournaments.

The BWF Super 750 event in India serves as a preparation for the upcoming BWF World Championships in 2026. India, hosting the championship for the second time, aims to provide a better experience for players and officials. Blitchfeldt hopes for significant improvements in conditions to support the successful hosting of international badminton events in the country.
