Veteran left-handed batter David Miller, aged 36, has been given the green light to participate in the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup after successfully undergoing a fitness assessment. The South African cricketer had sustained an adductor injury while representing Paarl Royals in the SA20 league but is now fit to join the Proteas for the tournament commencing on February 7 in India and Sri Lanka.
Having featured in 133 T20Is for South Africa, Miller has accumulated 2630 runs at an impressive strike-rate of 140.56. Cricket South Africa confirmed his availability, stating, “Proteas Men’s batter David Miller has been medically cleared for next month’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka. He will link up with the squad as they depart for Mumbai from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.”
In preparation for the T20 World Cup, South Africa made strategic adjustments to their squad due to injuries. Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs were brought in as replacements for Tony de Zorzi and Donovan Ferreira, who were sidelined with hamstring and shoulder injuries, respectively. Despite a leg issue affecting Pacer Lungi Ngidi during the SA20 league, he is anticipated to regain fitness ahead of the tournament.
Aiden Markram will lead the South African team in Group D of the Men’s T20 World Cup, where they will face Afghanistan, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Arab Emirates. The Proteas will kick off their campaign against Canada on February 9 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Prior to the tournament, South Africa will engage in a warm-up match against India, replicating the 2024 T20 World Cup final encounter, at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on February 4.
