In Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district, farmers can now insure their wheat and barley crops under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) for the Rabi season until January 15. The extension was granted following a request from the Himachal Pradesh Agriculture Department to ensure all farmers benefit from the scheme without any time constraints. The Union Agriculture Ministry agreed to the extension to facilitate farmers’ participation in the crop insurance scheme.
Agriculture Development Officer Manjeet Singh emphasized the importance of farmers insuring their crops before the new deadline of January 15, 2026. Under the scheme, wheat and barley crops are insured for Rs 60,000, with farmers required to pay only 1.5% as a premium. The Central and State Governments will cover the remaining premium amount, alleviating financial burdens on farmers.
The crop insurance scheme serves as a safety net for farmers, providing compensation in case of crop damage due to adverse weather or natural calamities. This compensation plays a crucial role in stabilizing farmers’ financial situations during challenging times. Singh urged farmers to enroll in the scheme promptly to secure their crops and livelihoods.
