Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted the importance of June 25, marking the anniversary of the Emergency declared in 1975 by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He emphasized the need to uphold democracy, constitutional principles, and citizens’ rights and freedoms. Singh reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding constitutional values and strengthening democratic institutions.
Reflecting on the dark period of the Emergency, Singh recalled the curtailment of freedom of speech, attempts to influence the judiciary, and violations of citizens’ rights. He warned against the threats posed when those in power act authoritatively, endangering democratic institutions and constitutional values. Singh urged the nation to use this anniversary not just for historical reflection but also to renew dedication to democratic ideals and constitutional governance.
Singh paid tribute to those who resisted the Emergency and defended democracy and the Constitution. He expressed gratitude to those who stood against injustices during that challenging period. Meanwhile, the BJP will observe ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ (Constitution Murder Day) in Bihar, Haryana, and other parts of the country to commemorate the Emergency anniversary.
