Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, speaking at the 15th Indian Student Parliament in Pune, emphasized the importance of public service, discipline, teamwork, and integrity in politics. Gupta stressed that values like discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship can strengthen democratic institutions and improve political functioning.
In his address on the theme “From Stadium to Statesmanship: What Can Politics Learn from Sports?”, Gupta underlined that the playing field serves as a crucial training ground for leadership and public life. He urged young leaders to work with dedication and selflessness to uphold the nation’s dignity, similar to how athletes bring honor to the country. Gupta also emphasized the significance of treating political opponents as competitors and respecting democratic outcomes.
Gupta further discussed the role of the Constitution in guiding democratic processes, likening it to the rulebook in sports that ensures fairness and accountability. He encouraged the active participation of youth in governance and nation-building to achieve India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047. Gupta highlighted the importance of merit, transparency, and dedication in fostering a strong political culture and called on young leaders to contribute positively to public life.
The Speaker also stressed the value of technology and innovation in governance, suggesting that digital tools can enhance transparency and the delivery of public services. He motivated students to view setbacks as opportunities for growth and excellence, applauding the Bharatiya Chhatra Sansad for providing a platform for youth engagement in democratic processes and leadership development. Gupta concluded by emphasizing the need for leaders to focus on serving the nation and its people to bolster India’s global standing.
