Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta has extended the Winter Session by one day and has referred two complaints against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators to the Committee of Privileges for review. The complaints involve remarks made by Leader of Opposition Atishi regarding Sikh Gurus and the alleged breach of privilege by AAP MLA Jarnail Singh after his suspension from the Assembly on January 5. The Speaker emphasized the seriousness of the matter and the dignity of the House, prompting a detailed examination by the Committee of Privileges.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh highlighted the importance of pending government business due to disruptions by the Opposition, leading to the extension of the Assembly session by one day. He also requested an inquiry into the alleged remarks and their referral to the Committee of Privileges within a specified timeframe. Speaker Gupta, considering the gravity of the issue concerning Sikh Gurus, sent the entire matter for thorough examination and report by the Committee of Privileges.
Additionally, the Speaker acknowledged a complaint by BJP MLA Harish Khurana against AAP MLA Jarnail Singh for an alleged breach of privilege and contempt of the House. The matter has been forwarded to the Committee of Privileges for examination and appropriate action in accordance with the rules. Khurana’s complaint included a social media link showing Singh purportedly threatening security officials to enter the Assembly premises despite his suspension, which Khurana deemed as contempt of the House.
