Delhi BJP MP Manoj Tiwari has voiced his backing for awarding the Bharat Ratna to Mangal Pandey, a prominent figure in India’s fight for independence. Tiwari emphasized that Pandey’s legacy surpasses mere accolades and warrants the highest civilian honor.
Expressing his newfound endorsement, Tiwari highlighted the significance of recognizing Pandey’s contributions. He stated that while Pandey’s stature transcends the Bharat Ratna, acknowledging his pivotal role is crucial, and he stands in favor of this recognition.
Mangal Pandey, born on July 19, 1827, in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, was a pivotal figure in India’s struggle against British colonial rule. His defiance in 1857 sparked a significant uprising against British authority, fueled by grievances over the use of controversial Enfield rifle cartridges.
April 8 marked the 169th death anniversary of Mangal Pandey, whose actions in Barrackpore triggered a wave of resistance across India, leading to what is remembered as the First War of Independence. His unwavering stand for freedom continues to inspire generations, symbolizing a crucial chapter in India’s quest for independence.
Pandey’s sacrifice and courage were commemorated by the Government of India in 1984 through a special postage stamp, recognizing his enduring impact on the Indian freedom movement.
