The Delhi BJP is set to observe Emergency Black Day on June 25, aiming to raise awareness about the dark period in Indian democracy. Since 1980, the BJP has annually conducted an anti-Emergency public meeting on June 25, but this year’s event will take place on June 26 at 11 a.m. at the NDMC Convention Centre, Jantar Mantar. On June 25, 1975, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed a state of Emergency to retain power, leading to the violation of fundamental rights, mass arrests, forced sterilizations, press censorship, and centralized power.
To ensure the success of the upcoming meeting, Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra has formed a three-member team comprising MP Yogendra Chandolia, former Youth Front President Dharamveer Sharma, and former District President Devendra Solanki. This team will invite and honor Emergency prisoners who were relocated to Delhi and Delhi NCR during the dark period. The event aims to educate the youth and future generations about the assault on democracy by the Congress government in 1975. Last year, a photo exhibition at Connaught Place showcased the atrocities of the Emergency, inaugurated by the then Delhi BJP President and visited by BJP MP Tejasvi Surya.
