A Delhi court has postponed the hearing on a criminal revision petition filed against Sonia Gandhi, the Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party. The petition alleges that Sonia Gandhi’s name was fraudulently included in the voter list before she acquired Indian citizenship. The matter, being heard at the Rouse Avenue Court, is now scheduled for April 18 after the petitioner completed arguments, while Sonia Gandhi’s submissions were left unfinished.
The revision petition, filed by advocate Vikas Tripathi, requests the registration of an FIR and an investigation into the alleged improper inclusion of Sonia Gandhi’s name in the voter list without Indian citizenship. The petitioner’s counsel argued that the case involves a declaration by a foreign national that likely involved the use of forged documents or fraudulent means. Certified copies of the electoral rolls were presented to show prima facie evidence of a false declaration, prompting the need for an inquiry into alleged forgery and document fabrication.
While the petitioner’s arguments were concluded, Sonia Gandhi’s defense remained incomplete and will be continued on the next hearing date. In a previous ruling on December 9, 2025, Special Judge Vishal Gogne agreed to consider the revision plea and issued notices to Sonia Gandhi and the Delhi Police for further proceedings. The Magistrate Court had earlier dismissed a complaint seeking an FIR, citing limitations on judicial interference in electoral matters under Article 329 of the Constitution.
Sonia Gandhi has refuted the allegations as politically motivated, baseless, and rooted in incorrect information. She emphasized that matters of citizenship fall under the Central government’s jurisdiction, while electoral disputes are within the Election Commission of India’s purview. Sonia Gandhi also highlighted the lack of credible evidence to support claims of forgery or fraud, labeling the proceedings as an abuse of the legal system. The issue has sparked political controversy, with BJP leaders accusing the Congress of voter list manipulation and using Sonia Gandhi’s case as an example of alleged irregularities, a claim dismissed by the Congress as unfounded and retaliatory.
