The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has commenced a vast plantation initiative in the National Capital, aiming to nurture around 23 lakh native saplings including trees, shrubs, and bushes. This drive, directed by Lieutenant Governor and DDA Chairperson T.S. Sandu, will cover approximately 1,000 acres of land spread across various locations in Delhi. The plantation will include 675 DDA parks, four Ridge areas, and six biodiversity parks to enhance the city’s green cover.
The plantation drive, set to start in July and continue until mid-September, focuses on planting native and climate-resilient species. This effort is part of a larger plan to increase biodiversity, strengthen carbon sequestration potential, and improve ecological connectivity in Delhi. The initiative aims to bring nearly 2.9% of the city’s total geographical area under urban afforestation and ecological restoration.
Under the guidance of the Lieutenant Governor, the DDA is expanding Delhi’s green footprint to bolster its ecological infrastructure. The initiative emphasizes ecological restoration, climate resilience, and protection of vital ecosystems like the Ridge and Aravalli landscapes. Preparatory activities for the plantation drive are already in progress, including site identification, soil preparation, species selection, and maintenance planning to ensure sustainable growth and long-term survival of the plantations.
