Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized the government’s urgent efforts to provide ample drinking water to all residents of the capital. Measures are being taken to address immediate needs and implement long-term solutions to manage the water situation effectively. The supply has been strained near Wazirabad in the Yamuna due to water availability issues.
To combat water challenges exacerbated by the intense heat, Haryana has committed to maintaining a minimum water supply of 1,000 cusecs through the Munak Canal. Over 980 tankers and 6,000 daily trips are being utilized to alleviate the water scarcity. The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of safeguarding Delhi’s interests and ensuring continuous access to drinking water.
In response to the current crisis, the Delhi Jal Board is operating numerous water tankers and increasing water production capacity by installing additional borewells in the Yamuna Khadar area. The government is actively addressing water leakages and has deployed small tankers to ensure water supply in densely populated areas. Officials have been instructed to promptly address water leakage incidents and monitor complaints daily.
Efforts are underway to address both immediate challenges and long-term water management plans simultaneously. A feasibility study is being conducted by IIT Roorkee to explore the viability of bringing water from Haryana through a pipeline to reduce water loss and leakage. Projects such as dredging the Yamuna near Wazirabad, establishing new water treatment plants, and developing more borewells in the Yamuna Khadar area are also in progress.
