The Delhi Gymkhana Club has taken legal action against the government’s decision to reclaim its Safdarjung Road property for public security reasons. The club’s plea was presented in the Delhi High Court by senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi. The court has agreed to hear the case on May 26.
The dispute arose after the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs issued an eviction notice to the club management, instructing them to vacate the premises by June 5. The government stated that the land is crucial for defense infrastructure and other public security needs.
The club, established in 1913, is a renowned social institution frequented by senior officials and influential individuals. The premises, designed by architect Robert T. Russell in the 1930s, are located near the Prime Minister’s official residence. The club has a significant membership waiting list, with some applicants waiting for years to join.
The government has also issued a similar eviction notice to the Indian Polo Association, citing the same reasons for reclaiming the property. Both cases are linked to the strengthening and securing of defense infrastructure and public security measures.
