The prestigious Delhi Gymkhana Club, frequented by the elite and influential, situated in central Lutyens Delhi, is slated for acquisition by the Union government for public security reasons. An official document revealed that the Club’s 27.3-acre premises on Safdarjung Road will be reclaimed by the government on June 5 for defense infrastructure and public security purposes. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs stated that the land is crucial for urgent institutional needs and public-interest projects.
The notice issued to the Club management emphasized the strategic importance of the location near the Prime Minister’s Residence on Lok Kalyan Marg. It cited Clause 4 of the lease deed, allowing re-entry for public purposes, with the President of India ordering the immediate takeover. The Club, established in 1913 and designed by architect Robert T Russell, serves as a prominent social hub for bureaucrats, diplomats, and military officials.
Known for its exclusivity, the Club has a membership cap of approximately 5,600 permanent members, with limited spots opening annually. Prospective civilian members face a waiting period of over 40 years and a hefty application fee exceeding Rs 7 lakh. The government and defense personnel have reserved slots in the membership intake, reflecting the Club’s historical significance and high demand among the social elite.
