The Delhi High Court has granted bail to Salim Malik, also known as Munna, in connection to the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case. The court stated that Malik’s role was similar to that of other co-accused who had already been released on bail by the Supreme Court. The court described Malik as a “local-level facilitator” rather than a key conspirator in the alleged larger conspiracy.
Malik had been in custody for over five years and ten months, with the trial still ongoing. The court acknowledged that the trial process would take time and granted bail to Malik under strict conditions. The prosecution alleged that Malik participated in meetings, planned protests, delivered provocative speeches, and engaged in rioting activities during the riots.
The Delhi High Court, considering the Supreme Court’s findings in a related case, distinguished between core conspirators and local-level facilitators. It noted that Malik’s role was more operational and execution-focused rather than being involved in planning or directing the conspiracy. The court imposed various conditions for Malik’s bail, including a personal bond, surrendering his passport, and regular reporting to the police.
