The Delhi High Court has upheld actor Rajpal Yadav’s conviction in cheque bounce cases, rejecting his appeals against the trial court’s decision. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma criticized Yadav’s behavior, stating that despite multiple chances to repay, he consistently failed to fulfill his obligations. The court has ordered a total penalty of Rs 7.35 crore on the actor, with Rs 1.05 crore fine imposed in each of the seven cases.
Yadav has been given a two-month window by the High Court to challenge the ruling in the Supreme Court. The judgment, delivered by Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma, came in response to a series of petitions related to proceedings under the Negotiable Instruments Act. Despite an interim suspension of sentence granted earlier, the court maintained the penalty citing Yadav’s persistent non-compliance.
The High Court emphasized that Yadav had already made significant payments to the complainant company, totaling around Rs 4.25 crore. Despite this, the court refused to revoke the suspension of sentence, highlighting the actor’s obligation to either adhere to the settlement terms or contest the case on its merits. The actor’s failure to honor commitments had led to the court’s stern directives, ultimately resulting in his conviction and sentencing in multiple cheque dishonour cases.
