Describing the restoration of the Yamuna River as a top priority, Delhi Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu highlighted the importance of integrating technology, sustainability, and self-reliance for India’s urban future. At a National Technology Day event, he emphasized the role of scientific research and intellectual confidence in driving a self-reliant India. Sandhu stressed the need for technology to address real-world challenges in areas like public health and environmental governance, moving beyond the confines of laboratories.

Sandhu underscored the essential partnership between science and governance to develop effective civic solutions. He emphasized that significant achievements in nation-building require patience, discipline, and a willingness to innovate. The Lieutenant Governor also discussed the implementation of technology-driven public health systems, advocating for AI-based early-warning systems to enhance Delhi’s healthcare infrastructure. By utilizing predictive sampling and AI forecasting, the city can shift towards a proactive healthcare model, particularly for diseases like Dengue and Malaria.

Focusing on urban sustainability, Sandhu highlighted the critical importance of ecological restoration for enhancing quality of life. He called for scientific interventions in decentralized waste management, source segregation, and local composting to alleviate pressure on landfills and promote urban green spaces. Sandhu also addressed the need for integrated urban mobility, emphasizing the significance of intelligent traffic management and unified mobility solutions for Delhi’s development. He envisioned a commuter experience characterized by real-time GPS transit systems and enhanced last-mile connectivity to reduce congestion and pollution.

In light of challenges such as urban heat islands and water scarcity, Sandhu urged collaboration between urban planners and scientific institutions to adopt climate-smart strategies and expand green infrastructure. Reflecting on India’s ancient scientific heritage, he emphasized the importance of aligning modern progress with social purpose and human values. Sandhu commended organizations like Vigyan Bharati for bridging academia, research, and society, stating that the future of India’s scientific advancement hinges on combining innovation with responsibility and sustainability.
