In a move towards environmental conservation and sustainable development, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta revealed that the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will set up special collection boxes for old clothes at 10 key stations. People will have the opportunity to deposit garments they no longer use, which will then be recycled and transformed into useful items. Chief Minister Gupta emphasized the government’s dedication to establishing a clean, green, and environmentally conscious capital.
The initiative addresses the escalating challenge of textile waste and aims to ensure the proper recycling of old clothes. By implementing this program, not only will waste be minimized, but sustainable development will also be reinforced. The 10 selected Metro stations for this project include Shahdara, Mohan Estate, Rohini West, Lajpat Nagar, Malviya Nagar, Mayur Vihar Phase-I, Hauz Khas, Punjabi Bagh West, Dwarka, and Shalimar Bagh.
Chief Minister Gupta highlighted that the primary goal of this endeavor is to engage the public in the recycling movement and raise awareness about clothing reuse. The Delhi government is dedicated to encouraging community involvement in environmental initiatives. Additionally, the government ensures that the collected clothes will be used in an eco-friendly manner, maintaining transparency and efficiency throughout the process.
As part of the initiative, the garments will be sorted into different categories and provided to reputable non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and self-help groups (SHGs) for reuse and upcycling into practical products like bags and rugs. The collection points at the specified stations will be branded under the Delhi Metro Ladies Welfare Organisation (DMLWO), according to DMRC.
