Residents in Delhi-NCR are facing scorching weather as temperatures soar, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting severe heat and dry conditions until May 23. Daytime temperatures are expected to reach 42-45 degrees Celsius, prompting a yellow alert for May 19 and 20 to caution against heatwave conditions and advise minimizing outdoor exposure during peak heat hours. A heatwave is declared when temperatures hit 40 degrees Celsius, posing health risks, especially for children, the elderly, and outdoor workers.
Meteorologists anticipate Delhi’s temperatures to rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius in the next few days, with possible thunderstorms and gusty winds on Sunday. Despite brief cloud cover, temperatures are set to remain high around 44 degrees Celsius, with clear skies later intensifying the heat. Other regions like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh are also bracing for heatwaves, while the western Himalayan region may see a temperature rise of 3-4 degrees Celsius.
Parts of Northeast and South India are forecasted to receive moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds, affecting states such as Assam, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. Delhi’s air quality remains a concern, with AQI levels in the “poor” category at various monitoring stations. Health experts recommend staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, avoiding direct sunlight from noon to 4 p.m., and checking on vulnerable individuals during the ongoing heatwave.
