The national capital, Delhi, is set to see a shift in weather patterns after a period of dry and warm conditions, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Expectations include light rainfall and thunderstorms on May 11 and 12, with a yellow alert issued for possible lightning and gusty winds. Delhi may witness very light to light rain during the afternoon and evening hours on both days, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds of 40-50 kmph in various parts of the city.
The IMD forecasts a maximum temperature of around 38 degrees Celsius on May 11, with a minimum temperature near 27 degrees Celsius. Similar conditions are anticipated for May 12, with daytime temperatures dropping slightly to about 37 degrees Celsius post the rainfall. Prior to this weather change, Delhi is likely to have clear skies on May 9 and 10, with temperatures ranging between 36 and 38 degrees Celsius. No weather alerts are in place for Saturday or Sunday.
The upcoming rain and thunderstorm activity are expected to provide temporary relief from the prevailing heat, with temperatures likely to decrease after the showers. By May 13, partly cloudy skies are expected, followed by clearer weather from May 14 onwards. The IMD advises caution during thunderstorm hours, especially while commuting in the evening, due to potential strong winds and lightning strikes.
Several weather stations in Delhi recorded below-normal temperatures on Friday, with Palam, Lodi Road, and Ridge stations reporting temperatures lower than the seasonal average. Delhi’s air quality remains in the “moderate” category, with acceptable AQI levels across most monitoring stations in the city. Notable AQI readings include Anand Vihar (136), Aya Nagar (109), Burari Crossing (116), Chandni Chowk (67), DTU (107), IIT Delhi (104), JNU (89), Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium (89), Mundka (131), Narela (143), Pusa (92), Rohini (139), and Wazirpur (143).
