Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta revealed plans to revamp over 241 major roads covering 400 km in the city under a ‘wall-to-wall carpeting’ model, costing Rs 802.18 crore. The initiative, supported by the Central government, aims to enhance road quality by eliminating potholes and dust, ensuring smoother and durable surfaces. This project targets a pothole-free and well-organized road network for Delhi residents.
The redevelopment project will cover nearly 400 kilometers of roads across 45 Assembly constituencies in Delhi. Of the total cost, Rs 643.36 crore will be sourced from the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) of the Central government, with the Delhi government contributing Rs 158.82 crore. The comprehensive approach involves strengthening entire road stretches from edge to edge to improve longevity and durability.
Chief Minister Gupta highlighted that the conventional practice of patching central portions or isolated potholes leads to rapid road deterioration. By uniformly reinforcing entire road sections, the new model ensures enhanced durability and lifespan. Last year, around 150 kilometers of roads in Delhi were constructed using this advanced technology.
The ‘wall-to-wall carpeting’ technique will not only create even road surfaces but also significantly reduce dust and air pollution in the city. By preventing loose soil and fine particles from becoming airborne due to vehicular movement, the initiative aims to lower particulate matter levels and enhance cleanliness and air quality in the surrounding areas. The project is scheduled for completion by the year-end, with phased work to minimize traffic disruptions and public inconvenience.
