A day after tensions rose at Delhi University regarding UGC’s Equity Regulations and an alleged assault on a woman social media influencer, Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh called for harmony among teachers and students. Singh emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and unity within the university community to avoid discord and uphold the institution’s reputation. He acknowledged the diverse student body at Delhi University and stressed the significance of social harmony for all members.
Singh disclosed that he had engaged with various student and teacher groups as well as the police administration to prevent any future incidents that could disrupt harmony. He also mentioned that the new UGC rules are currently being reviewed by the Supreme Court, urging everyone to trust the Government of India and await the court’s decision. The regulations aim to address caste discrimination on campuses and promote equity in higher education.
Following a demonstration supporting the UGC’s equity regulations at the Faculty of Arts, a clash erupted between student groups, leading to the alleged mistreatment of a woman influencer. Subsequently, another group protested outside Maurice Nagar Police Station seeking justice for the influencer. The UGC 2026 regulations have faced criticism for their perceived ambiguity and inconsistencies, especially concerning the treatment of Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in higher education.
