India’s representation at the South African Women’s Open began impressively with Diksha Dagar emerging as the top Indian contender in Cape Town. Diksha, a left-handed golfer who previously won this title in 2019, showcased a strong performance by carding a remarkable five-under 68 at the Royal Cape Golf Club. Her back-nine display, featuring five birdies, highlighted her skill and determination after a mixed start on the front nine.
In addition to Diksha’s lead, Pranavi Urs also displayed a commendable performance, securing a tied 20th position with a two-under 70. Despite facing challenges, including a bogey, Pranavi’s round demonstrated a mix of recovery and consistency, positioning her well in the tournament. Meanwhile, other Indian golfers like Hitaashee Bakshi, Avani Prashanth, Tvesa Malik, and Vani Kapoor faced tougher competition, needing improved rounds to stay competitive as the cut approaches.
While Diksha’s resurgence captured Indian fans’ attention, the overall leaderboard was dominated by Germany’s Patricia Schmidt, who excelled with a career-best 10-under 63. Schmidt’s exceptional performance, including an eagle and multiple birdies on the back nine, set a high standard in the tournament. For India, Diksha’s strong start not only enhances her prospects in South Africa but also fuels her ambition to win the Hero Women’s Indian Open. As the competition progresses, Indian hopes rest on Diksha’s ability to maintain her form and mount a serious title challenge.
