Following the tragic fire incident at Prasad Hospital that resulted in the loss of seven patients, the district administration in Muzaffarpur has initiated a rigorous enforcement campaign targeting private hospitals and nursing homes. This operation, described as one of the largest in the district’s healthcare sector, aims to ensure compliance with safety regulations and prevent similar tragedies.
The enforcement drive began with a focus on Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), a key medical facility in the city. A team comprising administrative and health department officials, led by SDM Tushar Kumar, conducted surprise inspections at various private healthcare facilities. Any institution found lacking adequate fire safety measures or necessary documentation was promptly sealed on the spot.
The inspections cover a range of aspects including fire safety systems, emergency exits, ventilation, availability of qualified medical staff, and adherence to operational safety standards. SDM Tushar Kumar emphasized that hospitals failing to meet these requirements would face strict consequences, with a zero-tolerance approach towards endangering patients’ lives.
The enforcement drive extends beyond licensed medical establishments to identify unauthorized hospitals and clinics operating without proper approvals. Health department teams are verifying the validity of registrations and clearances, including No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from the Pollution Control Board. Action is also being taken against unqualified practitioners and alleged fake doctors in the district.
The extensive enforcement measures have prompted concerns among private healthcare providers in Muzaffarpur, leading many establishments to swiftly address deficiencies in infrastructure and documentation. Authorities have clarified that the campaign will not be limited to the city, with plans for similar inspections in other subdivisions and rural areas. Hospitals found violating safety standards may face legal repercussions, including criminal cases where warranted.
