At least 69 individuals lost their lives in two tragic incidents in Cote d’Ivoire this week, with numerous others reported injured or missing. Ivorian Minister of Communication and government spokesperson Amadou Coulibaly revealed that torrential rains in the Abidjan district claimed 59 lives, with the highest death toll in the Attecoube commune, where approximately 20 people perished. The fatalities resulted from landslides, mudslides, and flooding in various Abidjan neighborhoods during the night from Sunday to Monday.
In a separate event, a canoe accident between Avikam Island and Liboli Village in southern Cote d’Ivoire led to the deaths of at least 10 individuals, with several others still unaccounted for. The passengers, including women and children, were returning from purchasing cassava when the canoe capsized unexpectedly, prompting a rescue operation by firefighters. Search efforts are ongoing to find those who are still missing.
Authorities have expressed condolences to the families of the victims and emphasized the importance of adhering to safety guidelines, such as evacuating high-risk areas. The government is actively involved in search and recovery operations to address the aftermath of these tragic incidents.
