Dutch football referee Rob Dieperink has passed away, weeks after being removed from officiating at the World Cup due to a police case in Britain that was later dismissed.
Dieperink, who was set to be a VAR official at the FIFA World Cup 2026, was taken off FIFA’s list of World Cup officials in May. The cause of his death has not been revealed, leaving the Netherlands’ football association in shock and deep sorrow.
The Netherlands’ football association expressed profound grief over Dieperink’s death, highlighting his international experience and exceptional refereeing skills. FIFA also extended condolences to his family, friends, and the Dutch Football Association, mourning the loss of a respected colleague.
Dieperink, aged 38, was arrested by the Metropolitan Police in April following allegations of sexual assault against a teenage boy. However, the case was closed due to insufficient evidence. Despite being cleared, Dieperink stated in an interview that he was wrongly accused, emphasizing his innocence.
Rob Dieperink had a successful career as a referee in professional football since the 2011/12 season, overseeing numerous matches in the Eredivisie and international competitions. His contributions as a VAR at prestigious events like the European Championship and the Olympic Games were notable, reflecting his dedication to the sport.
