Enforcement Directorate (ED) teams, along with Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel, are conducting raids at eight locations in West Bengal. The investigation is related to financial corruption and forgery, where money was allegedly collected from people promising benefits under government schemes. Approximately Rs 165 crore was gathered from around 20,000 individuals. The ED initiated action following a complaint but has not disclosed further details.
Raids and search operations took place in Kolkata and Bangaon sub-division in North 24 Parganas district. Four locations in Kolkata and four in Bangaon were targeted. In Bangaon, the residence of Trinamool Congress leader Avijit Biswas, suspected to be the mastermind, was searched. However, Biswas was not present at his Bangaon residence when officials arrived. The new BJP government in West Bengal, under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, has shown a strong stance against corruption.
The West Bengal Public Safety & Control of Anti-Social Activities Act, 2026, recently enacted by the state government, includes provisions to tackle corruption. The Act allows for property confiscation of those involved in such offenses under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The government’s actions reflect a commitment to combat corruption effectively.
