The Election Commission of India has instructed West Bengal’s Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and CAPFs to ensure zero tolerance towards post-poll violence in the state. This directive follows reports of violence erupting across West Bengal after the Assembly election results were announced. Trinamool Congress has alleged that its party offices were attacked and workers were assaulted by BJP supporters.
After incidents like the ransacking of a Trinamool Congress MLA’s office and attacks on party offices, the Election Commission urged authorities to crack down on post-poll violence. The BJP’s victory in West Bengal marked a significant political shift in the state, with the party securing 207 seats in the 294-seat Assembly. Trinamool Congress, on the other hand, saw a decrease in its seats from 215 to 80.
In response to social media posts inciting unrest, Kolkata Police warned of legal action against those spreading fake news. The police assured that the situation in the city was under control and urged the public not to share misleading information. This caution came after various unverified photos and videos circulated online, claiming violence in Kolkata post the election results.
