As Tamil Nadu prepares for the upcoming Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced various initiatives to improve voter experience and transparency during the polling process. These measures aim to enhance facilities on the ground, utilize technology effectively, and increase voter engagement throughout the state.
Efforts are underway to upgrade infrastructure at polling stations, particularly those located in schools and colleges, to ensure a smooth voting process for citizens. Special attention is being given to providing seating arrangements, shade, and necessary amenities, especially for vulnerable groups like senior citizens, pregnant women, and individuals with disabilities.
In a move towards sustainability, the Commission is testing “green polling stations” in specific areas. These stations will promote eco-friendly practices by reducing the use of single-use plastics and implementing better waste management systems, setting an example for environmentally conscious elections.
To streamline the voting process, officials are introducing improved voter information slips with clearly printed details such as serial and part numbers. Additionally, mobile phone deposit facilities will be available at polling stations, and there are plans for 100% webcasting at all booths to ensure strict monitoring and prevent electoral malpractices.
The ECI is also focusing on increasing voter engagement, especially among the youth, through special outreach campaigns featuring audio-visual content and the participation of popular figures. Efforts are being made to encourage first-time voters to actively participate in the electoral process.
In urban areas, the Commission is encouraging the establishment of polling booths within multi-storey residential complexes to enhance accessibility. While 14 such locations have been identified, officials note the need for greater cooperation from residents to expand this initiative and improve voter turnout.
Addressing concerns regarding delays in voter turnout data, the ECINET app will now provide real-time updates, with Returning Officers uploading figures every two hours. This initiative aims to make data readily available to all stakeholders and reduce time delays in accessing turnout information post-election.
Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik has urged voters to verify their names on electoral rolls promptly and utilize digital platforms for information. She emphasized citizen vigilance and encouraged the public to report any violations of the Model Code of Conduct using the cVigil app. Enforcement teams have also intensified monitoring activities, seizing cash and materials worth Rs 42.65 crore during inspections in Tamil Nadu ahead of the April 23 polls.
