A day after the election results, the Election Commission of India has informed the state Governors and Puducherry Lieutenant Governor about the formation of new Assemblies in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. The terms of the Assemblies in these regions are concluding between May 7 and June 15, 2026. The notifications by the ECI enable the victorious party leaders in each state and UT to claim government formation before the previous Assembly’s term ends.
The tenure of the West Bengal Assembly concludes on May 7, Tamil Nadu on May 10, Assam on May 20, Kerala on May 23, and Puducherry on June 15. In the wake of the recent Assembly election, outgoing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has raised concerns about the process and has not resigned. Unlike Mamata Banerjee, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan have accepted defeat and resigned.
Mamata Banerjee, speaking in Kolkata, has refused to resign voluntarily as the outgoing Chief Minister, citing irregularities in the election results. She emphasized that the defeat of the Trinamool Congress was not a true reflection of public sentiment due to alleged malpractices. Banerjee mentioned receiving support calls from key opposition leaders like Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, Akhilesh Yadav, and Hemant Soren post the election results.
Banerjee highlighted the need to unite the opposition against the Bharatiya Janata Party and the NDA-led government at the center, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the Opposition INDIA Bloc for a national movement.
