In an effort to enhance voter participation, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated special voter registration camps in Tamil Nadu. These camps aim to help eligible citizens register for voting or rectify their details following the release of the state’s draft electoral roll on December 19. More than 97 lakh names were removed from the draft list, with reasons including change of residence, duplication, death, or ineligibility.
Voters who were excluded from the draft list have a one-month window until January 18 to re-enroll. To address the significant number of omissions and ensure no eligible voter is missed out, the Election Commission has scheduled a four-day special voter registration drive across Tamil Nadu. The first phase of these camps is taking place over the weekend, with another round planned for January 3 and January 4, covering around 75,000 booths.
During these special camps, citizens can apply for voter registration or make corrections using Form 6. Since the draft roll’s publication, officials have received 1,68,825 applications for new voter inclusions. The Chief Electoral Officer urges all eligible citizens, especially those excluded from the draft list, to take advantage of this opportunity to ensure accurate and updated electoral rolls for fair elections.
Election officials will be available at polling stations during the special camp days to assist applicants, verify documents, and streamline form processing. Citizens are also advised to verify their details on the online voter portal and make necessary corrections before the final electoral roll is issued.
