The Election Commission of India will make a decision on the Bharatiya Janata Party’s request for repolling in 77 booths across four Assembly constituencies in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district. These booths were part of the second phase of the Assembly elections held on April 29. Notably, 64 of the booths are located in the Diamond Harbour subdivision, which falls under the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency represented by Abhishek Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress.
An official from the Chief Electoral Officer’s office revealed that out of the 77 booths under scrutiny, 32 are in the Falta Assembly constituency, 29 in the Diamond Harbour Assembly seat, three in the Budge Budge constituency, and 13 in the Magrahat (Purba) Assembly constituency. The first three Assembly constituencies are under the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha, while Magrahat (Purba) falls under the Jaynagar Lok Sabha, both situated in the South 24 Parganas district.
During the first phase of the Assembly polls on April 23, no repolling was conducted, and no party had requested it. Falta Assembly constituency has been in the spotlight recently due to conflicts between the ECI-appointed police observer and the Trinamool Congress candidate. Additionally, a controversy arose in Falta when it was observed that the EVM buttons next to the BJP candidate’s name were covered with white tape on Wednesday. The Election Commission promptly addressed the issue and sought a report from the CEO’s office, with a decision on repolling expected on Thursday.
