The Election Commission of India has shifted the investigation into the harassment of seven judicial officers in Kaliachak, Malda district, to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Initially, it was believed that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) would handle the case, but the ECI opted for the NIA instead.
ECI Secretary Sujeet Kumar Mishra has officially informed the NIA Director General about this decision and instructed the agency to commence the inquiry promptly. The NIA is expected to start its investigation in West Bengal without delay, with a preliminary report slated for submission to the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court, following a strong condemnation of the incident, had given the ECI the choice between assigning the probe to the CBI or the NIA. Opting for the latter, the ECI directed the NIA to report directly to the Supreme Court in accordance with its guidelines. The NIA team is anticipated to arrive in West Bengal on Friday to kickstart the investigation.
