Electrification works on the 508-km Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor are advancing, alongside civil construction and track laying. This project is introducing India’s first high-speed railway electrification system, designed to support train operations at speeds of up to 320 kmph.

The corridor is being equipped with a 2×25 kV Overhead Traction System, a technology widely used for high-speed rail internationally but being deployed in India for the first time. This system is crucial for providing a stable and uninterrupted power supply for high-speed train operations. Electricity from the National Power Grid will be routed through specially designed Grid Substations to 14 Traction Substations positioned along the route.

These substations, located in Maharashtra and Gujarat, will supply power to different sections of the corridor, ensuring seamless transitions for trains. The project also includes Switching Posts and Distribution Substations to maintain uninterrupted power supply and provide electricity for various operational infrastructure needs.

The overhead electrification network will cover 1,125 track kilometers, supported by steel masts and cantilever assemblies. These masts will support a compound catenary system, allowing smooth power supply to trains at high speeds. The project also emphasizes domestic manufacturing of key components to enhance industrial capabilities and reduce reliance on imports for future high-speed rail projects.

Safety systems are a crucial aspect of the electrification program, with each Traction Substation equipped with Early Earthquake Detection Seismometers to ensure train safety during seismic events. Real-time monitoring from a central control center will help maintain the safe and reliable operation of high-speed trains.
