The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has decided to involve itself in the case concerning the alleged assault on its officials during a raid related to the CMRL-Exalogic case. The incident occurred outside the rented residence of former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, where his daughter Veena Vijayan, an accused in the case, resides.
Following the grant of bail to one of the accused, the ED is set to present its objections in court. The attack took place after the ED officials questioned Veena at Vijayan’s rented home, leading to an altercation with pro-CPI(M) workers as they were leaving the premises.
The state police are reevaluating the situation, expressing concerns about the handling of the prosecution. The Museum Police have suggested appointing a Special Public Prosecutor instead of the current District Prosecutor, while the Station House Officer has sought urgent intervention from the City Police Commissioner.
Police sources have indicated plans to approach a higher court to challenge the bail granted to Harish Kumar, the ninth accused in the case. During the bail hearing, the prosecution informed the court that further custody of the accused was unnecessary for interrogation, leading to the bail being granted.
The case revolves around the alleged attack on ED officials during a search operation related to financial transactions involving Veena Vijayan. The ED’s decision to join the legal proceedings highlights the gravity of the situation, with senior officials reviewing the implications of the bail order.
Investigators are concerned that granting bail to one accused could set a precedent for others, potentially impacting the investigation. Close coordination between the police and the ED is expected as the legal process advances, amidst significant political and public interest in Kerala.
