Entrepreneurs and activists highlighted the crucial role of women in decision-making concerning India’s energy transition during a climate talk event. Neha Saigal, the author of ‘Powering the Future: Women Leading India’s Energy Transition,’ emphasized that women are pivotal in shaping the energy transition and climate solutions in the country. Saigal pointed out that women have not been central to India’s energy discussions but are essential architects for a ‘just transition.’
She mentioned that her book showcases stories from various parts of India illustrating how women are shaping the new energy landscape towards a green economy. Saigal identified societal gender inequalities as a significant barrier hindering women’s increased participation in the energy sector. She stressed the need to create a gender-equal space in energy decision-making and conversations within communities.
Saigal emphasized the necessity for structural changes in policy, finance, and governance to increase women’s presence in the renewable energy sector. Amrita Rana, a founding member of Clean Air Punjab in Amritsar, emphasized the importance of women’s involvement for the success of energy transition. Rana advocated for women’s participation in policy-making processes to achieve genuine gender equality in outcomes.
She highlighted the lack of adequate opportunities for women in India’s clean energy sector due to existing policies. Rana suggested that rural women can be integrated into clean energy projects through supportive measures like handholding. Rana cited the example of pink autos in Amritsar, where empowering campaigns revealed women’s readiness for opportunities and belief in their capabilities.
