Preparations for Ethiopia’s general elections on June 1 are complete, ensuring integrity, as confirmed by the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE). Over 50.5 million voters have registered, with 52,000 polling stations set up nationwide. Special provisions are made for displaced persons, defense forces, and students to participate.
The NEBE introduced a digital platform for voter and candidate registration, combining digital and in-person methods. Women account for 46% of registered voters, while men make up 54%. The ruling Prosperity Party (PP) and opposition parties are concluding their campaign rallies ahead of the elections.
The PP recently held large rallies across the country, emphasizing development efforts. Addis Ababa Mayor highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects as a testament to the ruling party’s leadership. 47 political parties have registered candidates for the elections, with over 10,900 individuals vying for seats in the Ethiopian House of Peoples’ Representatives.
Diplomats and international organizations were briefed on election preparations, underscoring Ethiopia’s commitment to a peaceful process. The upcoming elections will elect representatives for the HoPR and regional state councils, determining the government and prime minister based on majority seats in the HoPR.
