European Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Suica, highlighted the significance of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) following her meeting with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Cyprus. Suica expressed that the IMEC remains a top priority for enhancing trade, energy, and digital connections, aiming to foster peace and prosperity in the region.
Suica also mentioned the strong progress in the India-European Union (EU) partnership, which contributes to growth, stability, and opportunities across Europe, the Middle East, the Gulf, and India. Amid escalating tensions, both the EU and India are committed to collaborating for stability in the Middle East and ensuring secure maritime routes, including through the Strait of Hormuz.
During his official visit to Cyprus from May 27-28, EAM Jaishankar participated in the informal meeting of EU Ministers for Foreign Affairs (Gymnich) as a special invitee. Discussions at the meeting focused on shared policy interests, particularly the geopolitical implications of developments in West Asia and the broader region.
On the sidelines of the Gymnich meeting, EAM Jaishankar engaged in structured bilateral discussions with various officials, including EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, and Foreign Ministers from Saudi Arabia, Ukraine, and Spain. These interactions provided a platform to exchange views on West Asia, the Ukraine conflict, India-EU cooperation, bilateral relations, and regional developments.
EAM Jaishankar’s visit underscored India’s deepening connections with Cyprus, the European Union, and key regional partners, further enhancing the India-EU Strategic Partnership.
