An explosion at Qatar’s vital natural gas export infrastructure has caused injuries to at least 54 individuals, with 18 others currently missing. The blast occurred in the Ras Laffan industrial area, a crucial energy hub globally, as efforts were ongoing to resume operations after previous disruptions due to regional conflicts. Emergency response teams rushed to the Barzan gas supply facility where a major fire broke out following the incident.
State energy giant QatarEnergy confirmed the explosion, stating that the incident happened during efforts to restart parts of the export terminal. The scale of the damage is yet to be fully determined, but Qatar’s Interior Ministry reported a higher number of casualties than initially stated. At least 54 people were injured, and search operations are underway for the 18 missing workers.
The Barzan facility plays a significant role in Qatar’s gas infrastructure, boasting a production capacity of nearly 1.4 billion standard cubic feet of sales gas per day. This output is mainly utilized for domestic electricity generation and to power desalination plants that cater to the water needs of the arid Gulf state.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion while search-and-rescue operations continue at the site. The incident comes amidst a period of regional instability, with concerns rising about the vulnerability of critical energy facilities in the Gulf amid broader geopolitical tensions.
