At least 55 individuals lost their lives, and numerous others were injured in Myanmar’s Shan State due to a powerful explosion that devastated Kaung Tat village. The incident, reportedly triggered by the accidental detonation of materials stored for mining, occurred near the border with China in an area controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA).
The explosion, which took place around noon on Sunday, resulted in significant destruction across the village, with reports indicating a death toll of 55, including 25 women and 30 men. Rescue operations persisted throughout the day and into the evening, with emergency teams working to locate survivors and recover bodies from the debris.
More than 100 houses suffered damage in the blast, leading to the displacement of numerous families and an urgent need for assistance. The Palaung State Liberation Front, the TNLA’s political wing, expressed sorrow over the incident and pledged to investigate the circumstances surrounding the explosion, vowing accountability for those responsible.
Efforts are underway to aid the affected individuals and families, with ongoing assessments of the damage and continued search operations for any remaining survivors amidst the wreckage.
