FC Barcelona took a significant step towards securing the La Liga title this season by defeating Atletico Madrid 2-1, while Real Madrid faced a similar fate with a loss to Mallorca by the same scoreline. Barcelona now holds a seven-point lead at the top of La Liga with eight matches remaining. Robert Lewandowski’s crucial goal in the 87th minute, set up by Joao Cancelo, sealed the victory for Barcelona.

In an eventful first half, Atletico Madrid briefly led in the 39th minute through Giuliano Simeone’s goal, but Marcus Rashford equalized for Barcelona just three minutes later. Atletico’s woes deepened as Nico Gonzalez was shown a red card in injury time of the first half. Barcelona dominated possession in the second half, with Atletico goalkeeper Juan Musso making key saves to thwart their attacks.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat against Mallorca, who escaped the relegation zone with the win. Mallorca capitalized on defensive lapses by Real Madrid to secure the victory. Despite Eder Militao’s late equalizer, Mallorca struck back immediately to clinch all three points. Real Madrid’s defensive vulnerabilities were exposed once again as Vedat Muriqi found the net in the dying moments of the match.

Real Sociedad secured a 2-0 victory over Levante, with goals from Jon Martin and Brais Mendez. However, their joy was tempered by an injury to Ander Barrenetxea. On the other hand, Real Betis’ struggles continued as they played out a goalless draw against Espanyol, who are yet to win a game in 2026.
