Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman pledged assistance to Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh to boost the state’s financial health and economy. The assurance included aid for the rehabilitation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) affected by ethnic violence in Manipur. Chief Minister Khemchand Singh sought increased financial aid from the Centre to promote inclusive growth in the state.
The meeting between the Finance Minister and the Chief Minister was described as productive, with Khemchand Singh expressing gratitude for Sitharaman’s attention to the state’s issues. The Chief Minister also appreciated the Finance Minister’s ongoing support and dedication to Manipur’s progress and prosperity. Khemchand Singh, along with his Deputy Chief Ministers Losii Dikho and Nemcha Kipgen, met with various central government officials during his visit to New Delhi.
Losii Dikho, a member of the Naga People’s Front (NPF), and Nemcha Kipgen from the BJP, accompanied the Chief Minister. Kipgen, the first woman Deputy Chief Minister of Manipur, belongs to the Kuki community and represents the tribal-inhabited Kangpokpi district. Khemchand Singh’s visit to the national capital marked his first official trip after assuming office as Manipur’s new BJP Chief Minister on February 4.
In addition to meeting with the Finance Minister, the Chief Minister also held discussions with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP leaders Nitin Nabin and B L Santhosh. These meetings focused on various state issues and party affairs related to Manipur. The Manipur Chief Minister’s discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah centered on initiatives by the state government to promote unity among communities and restore peace in Manipur.
