Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently engaged in talks with Flying Whales President Sebastien Bougon in Paris regarding the French aerospace logistics company’s intentions to establish its ecosystem in India. Bougon briefed the Minister on Flying Whales’ sustainable public-private partnership projects worldwide and the diverse application use cases it serves. He emphasized the company’s role in fostering economic growth in landlocked regions and reducing the environmental impact of cargo transport, expressing interest in developing the entire manufacturing ecosystem in India.
Sitharaman welcomed Flying Whales’ interest in setting up operations in India and highlighted the country’s potential for such ventures. She encouraged Bougon to explore opportunities within India’s dynamic startup ecosystem. Additionally, she discussed the Indian Financial Services Centre Authority (IFSCA) at GIFT City and the potential utilization of frameworks for ship and air-vehicle leasing and Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO) by Flying Whales.
Flying Whales and India’s BLP Group had previously announced a strategic partnership on April 2, aiming to establish a comprehensive manufacturing ecosystem for heavy-lift cargo airships in India. This collaboration positions India as a key hub for advanced transport technology, aligning with discussions between French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The partnership involves the assembly of the LCA60t, a 60-ton payload capacity airship, targeting Asian and Middle Eastern markets.
The LCA60T, a large 200-meter-long cargo airship filled with helium, is designed for transporting up to 60 tonnes of payload. Its operational model encompasses both manufacturing and airline services for delivering oversized cargo to remote areas without traditional ground infrastructure. The primary applications include heavy-lift logistics for wind energy components, electrical transmission structures, and aerospace equipment, as well as disaster relief, medical supplies, and military equipment delivery to inaccessible locations.
