An FIR has been filed against the owners of a commercial building and others following a deadly fire in Lucknow’s Aliganj area that claimed 18 lives and left several injured. The FIR, lodged against six individuals, includes Sections 105, 110, 125, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Among those arrested were three building owners, with a fourth accused, the studio operator, also taken into custody.
The three-story building in Sector-D near Purania Chauraha housed various businesses, including a pet shop, clinic, video gaming zone, 3D animation center, and an IT networking office. The fire, which started in the pet shop and clinic around 2:30 P.M., led to thick smoke engulfing the entire building, resulting in tragic deaths, including animals in the pet shop.
Investigators highlighted the absence of basic fire safety measures and emergency evacuation facilities in the building. The structure’s deficiencies included a lack of fire safety arrangements, emergency exits, smoke ventilation systems, and allegedly unsafe electrical installations. The FIR accuses the owners and managers of disregarding safety protocols despite knowing the risks.
The blaze trapped occupants inside the building, forcing some to jump from upper floors and the rooftop to escape, causing severe injuries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences and announced ex gratia assistance for the victims. An investigation is underway to determine the fire’s cause and address safety violations.
