With the arrival of spring, Kolkata and districts in south Bengal experienced their initial rainfall of the year on Tuesday, as reported by the Regional Meteorological Centre. The rain, ranging from light to moderate, commenced at 4 a.m. in Kolkata and its nearby regions, with scattered showers in various districts. Weather Department officials anticipate continued rainfall in these areas over the next few days, with no significant temperature changes expected in north and south Bengal for the next week.
The Meteorological Department official mentioned, “Light to moderate rain is likely in multiple districts of south Bengal starting today. Some areas may also experience thunderstorms and strong winds. Kolkata will also witness cloudy skies throughout the day, with chances of light rain later.” Predictions include light to moderate rainfall in parts of Purulia, Jhargram, Bankura, and other districts, accompanied by thundershowers and gusty winds with speeds of 30-40 kmph.
The recent rainfall is attributed to a low-pressure system originating in the Bay of Bengal. The cyclone in the southeast Bay of Bengal has transformed into a low-pressure area, currently positioned in the central south Bay of Bengal and moving gradually north and northwest. It is expected to shift towards the east Indian Ocean and southwest Bay of Bengal in the coming days. In contrast, north Bengal is forecasted to experience light to moderate fog in districts like Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri for the next few days, with a slight rise in temperatures over the weekend.
The weather office also anticipates the low-pressure system affecting north Bengal later in the week, potentially bringing light rain and thundershowers to hilly areas like Kalimpong.
