Another fisherman has tragically lost his life in a tiger attack in West Bengal’s Sundarbans, as confirmed by the police on Wednesday. The victim, identified as Rampada Burman (45) from Chhota Mollakhali Kalidaspur area of Gosaba in South 24 Parganas district, was with his companions in the forest with valid permission when the incident occurred. While gathering crabs deep in the Sundarbans forest, a tiger suddenly pounced on Rampada, causing severe injuries.
His fellow fishermen bravely fought off the tiger, rescued Rampada, and transported him back to the village by boat. Despite being rushed to a local health center, he succumbed to his injuries later in the day. The authorities from the Sundarban Coastal Police Station arrived at the scene, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem examination, which is scheduled for Wednesday.
According to the Forest Department, Rampada and his companions had the necessary documents and permits for crab collection. Nisha Goswami, the Divisional Forest Officer of South 24 Parganas (south) Division, emphasized the importance of following forest rules and urged fishermen to exercise caution when entering such areas. Incidents of tiger attacks in the Sundarbans are not uncommon, given that many individuals venture into the forest daily in search of livelihood.
Rampada Burman leaves behind a wife and two children. This unfortunate event follows a similar incident on February 8, where a young man was fatally attacked by a tiger while crab hunting near Kalas Island in Patharpratima block of South 24 Parganas district. The tiger reportedly dragged him into the forest in front of his wife before his body was discovered the following day.
