Flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai, Maharashtra, will be suspended for six hours on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Both runways, 09/27 and 14/32, will be closed for scheduled pre-monsoon maintenance, rendering the airport non-operational during this time. This maintenance is part of the airport’s annual monsoon preparedness program to ensure operational safety during Mumbai’s heavy rainy season.
The Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), which manages the airport, stated that the maintenance work is crucial for the safety and upkeep of the extensive airside infrastructure spanning 1,033 acres. Recognizing the impact of the closure on one of the world’s busiest airports, authorities initiated consultations with airlines and stakeholders six months ago to adjust flight schedules in advance and minimize passenger inconvenience. As part of CSMIA’s monsoon contingency plan, stakeholders were informed well ahead of time to allow airlines to plan accordingly.
Recent disruptions at the airport have been notable. On March 8, 66 air traffic movements were canceled, including 32 arrivals and 34 departures. An earlier incident on March 3 saw 107 cancellations, comprising 54 arrivals and 53 departures, due to the West Asia conflict, causing significant passenger inconvenience and delays at the airport.
