Former Australian Open director, Paul McNamee, expressed that Nick Kyrgios’ decision to skip the singles draw at this year’s Australian Open is unlikely to impact the tournament significantly. Kyrgios, facing fitness challenges, will instead compete in the doubles with Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Kyrgios, who played only five matches in 2025 before ending his season due to injuries, has struggled with his form. Despite receiving a wildcard entry for the Brisbane International, he was eliminated in the first round, highlighting his ongoing challenges.
Additionally, Kyrgios and Kokkinakis faced defeat in the men’s doubles second round in Brisbane, losing to the French pair Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul. McNamee emphasized that Kyrgios may not be ready for the demanding best-of-five matches on hard courts, indicating a race against time for the Aussie player.
McNamee further noted Kyrgios’ injury woes, which have led to a significant drop in his world ranking and absence of a protected ranking. Despite past successes, including a Wimbledon final appearance in 2022, Kyrgios has been plagued by health issues, limiting his competitive appearances in recent years.
Reflecting on Kyrgios’ unique playing style and undeniable talent, McNamee acknowledged the controversial aspects of his personality while praising his authenticity. With Kyrgios and Kokkinakis set to receive a wildcard entry in the men’s doubles, the Australian Open main draw commences on January 18, with qualifying rounds already in progress.
