Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina refuted claims by certain politicians in Bangladesh holding her and the Awami League party responsible for the death of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia. Hasina emphasized that Bangladesh deserves unity, not division, during such times. She acknowledged Khaleda Zia’s significant contributions to the nation and expressed condolences to her family and supporters.
Khaleda Zia, a three-time Prime Minister and BNP chairperson, passed away on December 30 at the age of 80 after battling a prolonged illness. The former PM was laid to rest with full State honors the following day. Reports indicated that Khaleda Zia had been imprisoned for over two years starting from February 8, 2018, under what was described as a false case, leading to a severe deterioration in her health due to inadequate medical care.
Former minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury highlighted that during her tenure, Sheikh Hasina ensured that Khaleda Zia received top-notch healthcare. Chowdhury mentioned that despite their political differences, Hasina had facilitated life-saving medical treatments for Zia, including surgeries performed by foreign doctors. He emphasized that Hasina had shown compassion by providing medical care to Zia at home and in hospitals, ensuring she received international healthcare services.
Former PM Sheikh Hasina had earlier expressed her condolences over Khaleda Zia’s demise, recognizing her significant role in Bangladesh’s political landscape. Hasina praised Zia’s contributions to democracy and the nation, acknowledging her as a pivotal figure in Bangladesh’s political history. She extended sympathies to Zia’s family, including her son Tarique Rahman, and the members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, urging strength and patience during the challenging period.
