Former Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane highlighted the clear distinction between politics and the Indian armed forces, criticizing any attempts to connect the military with political affairs.

In an interview, General Naravane stressed that the Indian Army operates on a “chain of command,” clarifying that following orders from political leadership does not imply the Army’s involvement in politics. He firmly stated that the Army remains completely apolitical.

Emphasizing the significance of hierarchy, General Naravane explained that adherence to the chain of command is crucial. He reiterated that while the Army is apolitical, respecting the hierarchy and following orders is essential for the institution’s functioning.

Critiquing efforts to politicize the armed forces, General Naravane attributed India’s progress, in contrast to neighboring countries like Pakistan, to the military’s apolitical nature. He underscored the importance of maintaining the Army’s apolitical stance for the nation’s advancement and stability.
