Two-time Olympic bronze medallist and former India goalkeeper P. R. Sreejesh has publicly voiced his frustration after learning that his coaching tenure with the junior men’s team might not be extended. Sreejesh, who achieved five podium finishes in five tournaments, including a Junior World Cup bronze medal, expressed concern over the preference for foreign coaches by Hockey India.
In a social media post, Sreejesh questioned the decision to potentially end his coaching career despite his successful track record. He highlighted the trend of Indian coaches being overlooked in favor of foreign counterparts, raising doubts about equal opportunities for local talent in shaping the national teams.
Sreejesh disclosed details of discussions with Hockey India officials and the Union Sports Ministry, emphasizing the need for Indian coaches to play a significant role in developing the country’s hockey talent. He referenced a meeting with the Sports Minister earlier this year, where he was encouraged to lead the country in preparations for 2036.
Hockey India reportedly decided not to renew Sreejesh’s contract beyond the Junior World Cup cycle, citing concerns about timing and coaching style. Sources revealed that some players found Sreejesh’s approach too strict, leading to complaints within the federation. Additionally, there were apprehensions about potential injuries due to intense training at a young age.
Sreejesh, who retired as a player post the 2024 Paris Olympics, assumed the role of coach for the junior national men’s team shortly after. However, there are opinions within Hockey India suggesting that Sreejesh may have taken on the head coach position prematurely and should have gained more experience under a senior coach first.
The senior men’s team is presently under the guidance of South African coach Craig Fulton, who led India to an Olympic bronze in 2024. Fulton’s contract extends until the 2028 Los Angeles Games, emphasizing the federation’s trust in foreign coaching expertise.
